<Actually, both are needed. The golf/jetta has a prepump or transfer pump in <the gas tank which delivers fuel at a modest pressure to the fuel reservoir <and high pressure fuel pump module. The details are different for CIS, CIS-E <and digifant implementations, but all are two pump systems. Use the vanagon <pump to supply the golf fuel module.

I beg to differ on the prepump, it is needed in the Golf/Jetta because the fuel is drawn up and out the top of the tank. Since the fuel outlet on the Vanagon is down low on the tank the pump gets a positive head even without the prepump. As long as you don't mount the pump somewhere up high you shouldn't need the extra pump. I wouldn't have a clue how you would mount it up high in a Vanagon to begin with, so this is a non-problem. I've driven my van 8000K without a prepump and have had no problems with fuel delivery.
